Okoronkwo Returns to AFC Toronto Ahead of WAFCON

Esther Okoronkwo returned to action for AFC Toronto, participating for 25 minutes in a 3-1 win against Vancouver. This marks her comeback after nearly two months sidelined due to a meniscus tear sustained during a league match against Halifax earlier in the season.

Okoronkwo's return provides a significant boost for Nigeria as they prepare for the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations scheduled in Morocco from July 25 to August 16. She missed two international friendlies against Senegal during her absence, where Nigeria won 5-1 on aggregate.

Head coach Justin Madugu is faced with a decision regarding including the Canada-based midfielder in the final squad for the tournament. Okoronkwo was a standout performer in the last Women's Africa Cup of Nations, scoring two goals and providing seven assists, helping the Super Falcons claim their record-extending 10th continental title.

Nigeria is drawn in Group C alongside Malawi, Zambia, and Egypt, opening their campaign against Malawi in Rabat on Tuesday, July 28.
