India Rejects Tinubu's Envoys Over Tenure Policy

India has declined to accept the appointment of Bola Tinubu's envoy, Ambassador Muhammad Dahiru, due to a diplomatic policy that discourages the acceptance of ambassadors whose governments have less than two years remaining in office. This policy was confirmed by high-ranking officials in India's foreign service.

The rejection signals potential difficulties for Tinubu's other ambassadorial appointments, as several countries may follow India's lead. Tinubu's administration has already received indications of reluctance from New Delhi to grant formal approval for the envoy's appointment.

The Nigerian government is aware of the challenges posed by the short tenure of its ambassadors, as the next presidential elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, with Tinubu's first term set to conclude in May 2027. So far, only the United Kingdom has accepted one of Tinubu's ambassadorial nominees.

The situation raises concerns about the effectiveness of Nigeria's diplomatic relations under Tinubu's administration.
