INEC Begins Upload of FCT Council Poll Results Online

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has initiated the upload of results from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections onto its IReV portal. This election took place on Saturday, February 21, across six area councils, with results from 1,401 polling units in the Abuja Municipal Area Council uploaded, representing 57.74% of the polling units.

This development is part of a test run for electronic transmission of election results, which is significant in the context of the upcoming 2027 general elections. President Bola Tinubu signed the Electoral Act 2026 amendment bill into law, which has been a subject of widespread debate, particularly regarding provisions for real-time electronic transmission of election results.

The House of Representatives passed a bill in December 2025 mandating this electronic transmission, but the Senate initially rejected the proposal in early February 2026, leading to public protests. The Senate later approved a version that allows electronic transmission while retaining a manual backup for result collation in case of technological failure.
