INEC Chair Amupitan Locks in 2027 Election Date, Vows to Protect Officials

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan confirmed the 2027 general elections will proceed as scheduled and warned of legal action against anyone attacking electoral workers.
Prof. Joash Amupitan, heading the Independent National Electoral Commission, has ruled out postponing the 2027 general elections. During a gathering focused on the South-South zone in Port Harcourt, Rivers State last Saturday, he declared that preparations are progressing and the electoral schedule will remain unchanged.
No alterations to the calendar are being contemplated as the commission advances toward the polls. A forceful caution was issued by Amupitan regarding potential assaults on election workers and deployed National Youth Service Corps members.
He stressed that INEC would partner with law enforcement bodies via the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, prioritizing the protection of personnel involved in voting activities. Those who assault such officials face severe legal penalties, he warned.
The Port Harcourt gathering assembled INEC personnel representing all six South-South states to evaluate their preparation levels ahead of 2027. Given its extensive registered voter base, Rivers State received particular attention during these discussions.
The commission reaffirmed its dedication to conducting credible elections as part of broader readiness efforts. Technology deployment and logistical planning for the election season were also examined by leadership.
A structured, zone-by-zone assessment strategy reflects the commission's systematic approach to countrywide electoral organization. The zonal meeting functioned simultaneously as an orientation session and an evaluation mechanism for ensuring state operations conform to commission requirements.
