INEC Chairman Advocates for Women's Political Participation and Gender Equality

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of INEC, emphasized the need for constitutional amendments to enhance women's participation in Nigerian politics during a visit by the Women Collective Forum on September 17, 2025. INEC reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusive democracy, with a focus on increasing women's involvement in leadership roles.

Currently, 55% of INEC's leadership positions are held by women, showcasing the commission's dedication to gender equality. The visit coincided with the United Nations International Day of Democracy, highlighting the importance of achieving gender parity in political representation.

Professor Yakubu also highlighted INEC's structural mechanisms to foster gender inclusion and empower women across Nigeria.
