INEC Commits to Legislative Backing for Women's Representation in Parliament by 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to seek legislative support for affirmative action to enhance women's representation in parliament by the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this during a meeting with the Women Collective Forum led by Ambassador Nkoyo Toyo.

The aim is to amend the Constitution and Electoral Act to ensure greater inclusion of women and marginalized groups in legislative bodies. This move aligns with the global push for gender equality in governance.

INEC plans to engage lawmakers for necessary legislative actions to implement affirmative action effectively, recognizing the importance of diverse representation in decision-making bodies.
