INEC Confirms Eligible Candidates For 2026 FCT Council Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the eligible candidates for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council Election. A total of six chairmanship and 62 councillorship positions will be contested across six area councils in the FCT.

The announcement was made in a statement released by the National Commissioner and Chairman of INEC Information and Voter Education Committee. Candidates from 17 political parties submitted their nominations by the deadline of August 11, 2025.

According to the Electoral Act of 2022, personal details and academic credentials of the nominated candidates will be published by August 18, 2025, and displayed at the INEC offices in the area councils for public scrutiny. INEC urged the public to examine the documents for transparency and accountability.

The final list of candidates will be released on September 22, 2025, ahead of the FCT Area Council election scheduled for February 21, 2026.
