INEC Lifts Ban on 2026 FCT Area Council Elections Campaigns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has lifted the ban on campaigns for the 2026 FCT Area Council Elections in Nigeria. The decision, in line with Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, allows campaigns to run from Wednesday, September 24, 2025, to midnight on Thursday, February 19, 2026.

INEC emphasized the need for peaceful campaigns, warning against the use of incumbency power to gain undue advantage. The electoral umpire also reminded political parties and candidates to adhere to electoral laws, prohibiting abusive language, physical attacks, or destruction of opponents' campaign materials.

INEC pledged to monitor compliance closely to ensure a democratic and trustworthy electoral process.
