INEC Receives Over 4,800 Claims for Voter Register Cleanup

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported receiving more than 4,800 claims and approximately 600 objections to its Preliminary Register of Voters as part of its efforts to clean up the database ahead of the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, SAN, disclosed these figures on Friday in Abuja during a meeting with the ECOWAS Pre-Election Fact-Finding Mission.
The claims and objections were submitted at registration areas and through electoral officers. Most claims involved corrections and minor issues, with the online display of the register aiding in identifying discrepancies.
Amupitan assured that all valid claims and objections would be addressed before certifying the Final Register of Voters on December 15, 2026. He also announced plans for a nationwide mock accreditation exercise in November and highlighted improvements to the existing electoral system, including safeguards for result authentication at polling units before transmission to the Election Results Viewing portal, IReV.
