INEC Reports Progress for 2027 Elections Amid Concerns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced substantial progress in its preparations for the January 16, 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections, as stated by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, during a presentation at a Democracy and Governance Forum in Abuja. Represented by Mrs. Helen Ajayi, the Director of Planning and Monitoring, INEC revealed that it had released a revised timetable on February 26, 2026, outlining 14 critical activities, with the ninth activity currently being concluded.

The Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise has been completed, and preparations for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are underway. Ajayi noted that procurement of non-sensitive electoral materials has begun, and various training programs for personnel have been conducted.

Additionally, INEC is enhancing voter education and technology, including improvements to the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Nationwide zonal readiness assessments have also commenced, starting with the South-West zone in Lagos from September 7 to 9.
