INEC Reviews Electoral Guidelines for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) held a meeting on Tuesday with political party leaders at its headquarters in Abuja to unveil and deliberate on new electoral guidelines ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting was attended by chairmen and secretaries representing various political parties, including Nnenadi Usman from the Labour Party and Samuel Anyanwu from the People's Democratic Party.

INEC Chairman explained that the update of the guidelines was necessary to align with the provisions of the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, which requires adjustments to existing electoral procedures. INEC announced plans to continue the voter registration exercise, with online pre-registration starting on August 18, 2025, and personal registration beginning on August 25, 2025.

This exercise aims to allow eligible Nigerians to register and update their voter information. Additionally, there is ongoing debate regarding electoral reforms, particularly concerning the real-time electronic transmission of election results as stipulated in the Electoral Act amendment bill 2026.
