INEC to Revise 2027 Election Timetable Under New Act

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) revealed that it will issue a revised timetable for the 2027 General Election, aligning with the new Electoral Act 2026. This announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Prof.

Joash Amupitan, during a meeting in Abuja, where he also swore in new Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Chukwu Chukwu Emeka Joseph, representing Abia State.

The new Electoral Act, enacted on February 13, 2026, necessitates adjustments to the election timetable. Amupitan highlighted the importance of reviewing the transport logistics model to ensure effective performance ahead of the elections.

He noted that during the recent FCT area council elections, only 45% of polling units opened on time, indicating logistical delays. INEC aims to address voter migration issues and enhance voter access by creating an additional 56,000 polling units nationwide, bringing the total to 119,972.

The chairman stressed the need for ongoing voter education to ensure citizens are informed about polling locations and the electoral process.
