INEC Requires N873.7bn for Credible 2027 Elections, Chairman Informs National Assembly

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, addressed the National Assembly in Abuja, stating that INEC needs a total of N873.78 billion to organize the 2027 general elections.

He highlighted the importance of sufficient funding to prevent any crises and ensure critical technological reforms are implemented to enhance transparency and efficiency in the electoral process. The proposed budget is structured into five main components, including election operations, administration, technology, capital costs, and miscellaneous provisions.

The budget includes significant allocations for technology upgrades, such as enhancing electronic result transmission, voter accreditation, cybersecurity, and ICT infrastructure. Amupitan stressed the necessity of early preparation to safeguard Nigeria's democracy and avoid any electoral disruptions.

The proposed budget also covers provisions for improving server capacity, preventing system failures, and enhancing transparency in the electoral process.
