Amupitan Urges NPC to Support Credible 2027 Elections

On Monday, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), made an appeal to the National Peace Committee (NPC) during a stakeholders' briefing in Abuja.

He sought the NPC's assistance in rebuilding public trust and strengthening peace in Nigeria's electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections. Amupitan highlighted the urgent need to restore confidence in the electoral system, citing a significant trust deficit as a major concern.

He noted that without trust, voter participation would decline. The INEC Chairman described Nigeria's electoral landscape as diverse and highly competitive, stressing the importance of transparency and legitimacy in the electoral process.

He also addressed issues such as low voter turnout and misinformation, urging political parties to enhance voter mobilization and civic engagement. Amupitan confirmed that INEC is considering additional technological tests and mock exercises to prepare for the upcoming elections and emphasized the importance of early access to electoral funds for logistical planning.
