INEC Investigates 268 Voter Records for AI Irregularities

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has flagged 268 voter records in its preliminary Register of Voters due to suspected Artificial Intelligence-generated photographs and other irregularities. Lawrence Bayode, the Director of Information and Communication Technology at INEC, disclosed this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
The records were identified by the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) for further examination. Bayode indicated that some individuals misused a special registration provision for persons with disabilities to create fraudulent voter profiles.
INEC has begun cleaning up the preliminary register, distinguishing between AI-enhanced and fully AI-generated images. The preliminary Register of Voters was published on October 26, leading to public backlash over suspicious photographs, duplicate registrations, and missing names.
INEC has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of these discrepancies and to correct the affected records, as stated by Commissioner for Voter Education and Publicity, Muhammad Kudu Haruna.
