INEC Rejects Calls for Chairman Amupitan's Removal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly rejected calls for the removal of its chairman, Amupitan, stating that such demands are outside the established constitutional process and represent a direct assault on the independence of the electoral body. INEC, through its Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, clarified that the commission's actions are guided by strict constitutional mandates, specifically referencing Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution.

The commission's decision to comply with a court appeal judgment is aimed at preventing a recurrence of past electoral disputes, particularly in light of issues seen in Zamfara and Plateau States. INEC emphasized its commitment to neutrality and the expansion of democratic space, noting the recent registration of new political parties, which has increased the total to 22.

The commission also announced plans for a nationwide voter revalidation exercise to enhance the integrity of the voter register, ensuring reliable data ahead of the upcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States scheduled for June and August 2026.
