INEC Defends Chairman Amid Calls for His Removal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has firmly rejected calls for the removal of its chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, amidst claims of partisanship from political actors. INEC's Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, issued a statement on Thursday night in Abuja, clarifying that the commission's leadership structure is protected by the constitution.

The commission highlighted that the chairman's appointment and tenure are strictly governed by Section 157 of the 1999 Constitution. INEC emphasized its independence and warned that calls for removal outside the established constitutional process are a direct assault on its integrity.

The commission also addressed the recent court appeal judgment, stating that compliance was necessary to avoid past issues, such as those experienced in Zamfara and Plateau states. INEC is currently focused on the upcoming voter revalidation exercise, which is not intended as fresh registration but aims to enhance the reliability of voter data across Nigeria.

The commission reiterated its commitment to neutrality and democratic principles as it prepares for future elections.
