INEC Seeks ₦874 Billion Budget for 2027 Elections, Faces Scrutiny from National Assembly

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented a budget proposal of ₦873.778 billion for the 2027 general elections, seeking approval from the National Assembly. The budget includes funds for operational expenses, administrative costs, technology, and capital expenditure.

INEC Chairman, Amupitan, defended the budget, emphasizing the need for adequate funding to ensure transparent and accountable elections. The proposal also excludes a separate request from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for additional funds to allow corps members to serve as ad hoc staff during the elections.

The budget proposal is being reviewed by a joint committee of the National Assembly, with discussions on the timely release of funds and the need for transparency in budget allocation.
