INEC Urges Timely Fund Release for 2027 Election Prep

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for the prompt release of outstanding funds from its 2026 budget, crucial for the preparations of the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, made this request during a World Press Conference.
He highlighted that timely financing is essential for executing election preparations without disruption. While the Federal Government has been releasing statutory budgetary allocations, Amupitan stated that the remaining funds are necessary for various activities, including meeting international vendor obligations and upgrading election technology.
INEC's total proposed expenditure for 2026 is N171bn, with N140bn allocated by the Federal Ministry of Finance. For the 2027 elections, INEC projects a budget of N873.78bn, covering operational costs, administrative expenses, technology, and capital expenditure.
The commission has already begun procurement processes, including purchasing new Bimodal Voter Accreditation System devices and renovating offices nationwide.
