INEC Engages Disability Groups for 2027 Election Inclusion

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has initiated strategic engagement with the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) and Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs) to enhance the participation of persons with disabilities in the 2027 general elections. This engagement aims to ensure eligible voters with disabilities are well-informed and actively involved in the electoral process.

Acting Chairman Prof. Rhoda Gumus emphasized the importance of inclusivity, supported by legal frameworks such as Section 54 of the Electoral Act 2026 and the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018. The Commission has recorded 137,487 persons with disabilities, including various categories such as visually impaired and hearing-impaired individuals.

Gumus urged JONAPWD and OPDs to lead the sensitization efforts, ensuring their members receive accurate information on voter registration and voting procedures. The engagement is designed to identify barriers to participation and develop practical actions for the upcoming elections.
