INEC Launches AI Unit for 2027 Election Improvements

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has launched a dedicated Artificial Intelligence Unit aimed at improving the management of electoral data, voter registration, and results transmission in preparation for the 2027 general election. This announcement was made by the Chairman, Prof Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, during a courtesy visit from a delegation of the Canadian High Commission, led by Chargé d’Affaires Mr David Sproule, at INEC Headquarters in Abuja.

Prof Amupitan emphasized the importance of responsibly applying AI in the electoral process while implementing safeguards against misuse. He also mentioned INEC's participation in the Global Conference on Responsible AI and Elections scheduled for September 9-11, 2026, in Ottawa, which aims to address AI-related threats such as deepfakes and disinformation.

Mr Sproule reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic processes through technical assistance and expertise sharing. Prof Amupitan outlined five strategic priorities for the upcoming elections, including consolidating technology and enhancing inclusivity for marginalized groups.
