INEC Seeks Canada’s Support for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has sought enhanced collaboration with the Canadian government regarding electoral technology, artificial intelligence, voter inclusivity, and combating misinformation in preparation for Nigeria's 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, made this request on Friday during a meeting with a delegation from the Canadian High Commission, led by Chargé d’Affaires Mr. David Sproule, at INEC's headquarters in Abuja.

Amupitan acknowledged Canada's role as a reliable partner in Nigeria's democratic development, highlighting the importance of this partnership as INEC prepares for the elections scheduled for January 16 and February 6, 2027. He noted that INEC has utilized off-cycle elections to test electoral reforms, citing the recent Osun State governorship election as a benchmark.

The Commission aims to deepen cooperation with Canada in areas such as electoral technology reliability, democratic participation for underrepresented groups, and strategic communication.
