Infantino Defends World Cup Amid Criticism and Controversies

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, responded to critics of the World Cup, asserting that they were "spreading hate and false rumours" and that the tournament delivered "only joy and happiness." In an open letter published on Monday, Infantino urged detractors to reflect on their criticisms, which he claimed overshadowed the positive aspects of the event. He noted that the tournament faced controversies, including high ticket prices and visa issues, but emphasized that there were no incidents of violence and that safety was maintained.

Infantino highlighted FIFA's role in facilitating Iran's participation amid geopolitical tensions, stating that football is about peace. He also addressed criticism regarding officiating, particularly concerning a suspension of US striker Folarin Balogun, which UEFA labeled "unprecedented." Infantino defended FIFA's decisions, suggesting that such occurrences are common in major leagues.

His remarks contrasted with those of Iran's coach Amir Ghalenoei, who described his team as the "most oppressed" at the World Cup.
