Nigeria Police Force Struggles with Low Pay and Resources

Lawrence Alobi, a former Police Commissioner, highlighted the challenges faced by the Nigeria Police Force, which he described as the poorest paid in the world. He noted that the military has increasingly taken on policing duties, which should traditionally be the responsibility of the police.

Alobi emphasized that this shift has created significant difficulties for law enforcement in maintaining order and enforcing laws across the country. He called on the government to enhance the capabilities and resources of the police force to better address security problems.

Alobi criticized political interference that has undermined the professionalism of the police, leading to issues such as dishonesty and a lack of public trust. He stated that the police do not have enough personnel or tools to respond effectively to distress calls, which is critical in the 21st century where technology plays a vital role in intelligence gathering.
