U.S. Lawmaker Calls for Matawalle's Removal as Defence Minister

U.S. lawmaker Kimberli Daniel, a member of the Florida House of Representatives and chairwoman of the United World Congress, has called for the removal of Bello Matawalle from his position as Nigeria's Minister of Defence. This call comes in light of a comprehensive assessment that raises concerns over Nigeria's deteriorating security situation, particularly regarding attacks targeting Christian communities during the 2026 Easter period in states such as Plateau, Kaduna, and Nasarawa, where dozens of worshippers were reportedly killed.

The report, published on Tuesday, acknowledges the brutal violence against religious gatherings and condemns the attacks. Daniel's statement emphasizes the growing gap between official security statements and the realities faced by communities.

The report warns that Matawalle's tenure has been marred by allegations of credible integrity issues linked to bandit groups and ransom-related arrangements. It recommends an immediate review of defense leadership to restore public trust and strengthen institutional integrity.
