IOC Lifts Suspension on Russian Athletes Ahead of 2028 Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Tuesday that it has lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), facilitating a gradual return of Russian athletes to international sports competitions in preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This decision marks a significant shift in the global sports landscape, following four years of sanctions triggered by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The IOC has yet to determine whether Russian athletes will compete under their national flag or anthem. The IOC's executive board emphasized that the ROC must refrain from conducting activities in occupied territories and will be closely monitored.

Kirsti Coventry, the new IOC president, defended the decision, stating that athletes should not suffer due to their government's political actions. Mikhail Degtyarev, Russia's sports minister, welcomed the development, while Ukrainian officials and advocacy groups criticized the IOC's actions, urging host countries to maintain restrictions on Russian state symbols.

The IOC's decision comes amid ongoing scrutiny regarding Russia's doping history.
