Iran Demands Conditions for Strait of Hormuz Reopening

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the Islamic Republic has renewed its demands for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that any agreement with the United States would not guarantee immediate access to this critical energy chokepoint. The negotiations with Oman regarding the strait have been ongoing, with Araghchi indicating that an agreement on a temporary maritime transit route is "very close." However, he emphasized that the opening of the strait is contingent upon several conditions, including compensation for US violations of the Islamabad Agreement.

This agreement, which was signed in June, collapsed within a month due to disputes over control of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump has been pressing for the resumption of navigation through Hormuz, threatening further actions against Iran if it does not comply.

Vice President JD Vance mentioned recent progress in negotiations, but the outcome remains uncertain. Iran's demands also include lifting the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, withdrawing military forces from the region, and releasing frozen assets.
