Aguiyi-Ironsi Family Seeks Apology for 1966 Assassination

The family of Nigeria’s first military Head of State, Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, has called on the Federal Government to issue a formal apology and provide compensation for his assassination during the 1966 counter-coup. Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi, a nephew of the late leader, made this demand during an appearance on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday.

He described Aguiyi-Ironsi as a patriotic leader who accepted the responsibility of leading Nigeria during a turbulent period and stated that the family has not received justice or a sincere apology for his killing. Imo Aguiyi-Ironsi argued that his uncle did not commit any offense warranting assassination, as he was the most senior officer called to lead after the coup.

He emphasized the ongoing pain the family endures due to the lack of official reconciliation, despite Nigeria's political progress. Aguiyi-Ironsi served as Head of State for only six months before his assassination, which he believes should be remembered for his commitment to national service.
