Sultan Abubakar III Directs Muslims on Muharram Sighting

Sultan Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III of Sokoto has issued a directive to Muslims in Nigeria to participate in the nationwide sighting of the Muharram crescent, which will mark the commencement of the Islamic New Year 1448AH. This annual religious practice holds significant importance as Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam.

The Sultan's directive was communicated through a statement released by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council. The sighting is scheduled for Monday, June 15, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH.

Muslims are expected to carefully observe the sky immediately after sunset to verify the moon sighting. The Sultan instructed district heads, village heads, and traditional leaders to confirm and transmit verified information through recognized channels to the Sultanate Council.
