Sultan Calls for Moon Sighting to Mark Islamic New Year

Sultan Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar III, the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has called on Muslims across Nigeria to participate in the sighting of the new moon to determine the commencement of Muharram 1448AH. This event is significant as it marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year.

In a statement issued on Sunday by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sokoto Sultanate Council, it was noted that the sighting of the crescent moon will take place on Monday, June 15, 2026, which corresponds to the 29th day of Zulhijjah 1447AH. The Sultan urged the Muslim community to observe the sky at sunset on that day and report any authentic sightings of the new moon to their nearest district or village head.

The announcement is expected to be made based on verified reports received from across the country.
