Israeli Police Block Latin Patriarch from Holy Sepulchre

On Palm Sunday, Israeli police blocked Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem and head of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land, from entering the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate mass. This incident marks the first time in centuries that a church leader has been prevented from celebrating Palm Sunday at this historic site.

The police cited safety concerns and the complexity of access in the Old City, limiting public gatherings to 50 people amid heightened security measures following a U.S.-Israel strike on Iran. Pizzaballa condemned the police's actions as unreasonable and grossly disproportionate, emphasizing the impact on freedom of worship.

The incident drew international criticism, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani expressing concerns over religious freedom. Pope Leo XIII also acknowledged the situation during a prayer in Rome, highlighting the inability of Christians in the Middle East to fully observe religious rites due to ongoing conflicts.
