Italy FA Head Gravina and Buffon Resign After World Cup Fail

Gabriel Gravina, the head of the Italian Football Association (FIGC), announced his resignation after Italy's national football team missed qualifying for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. This decision came after Italy's defeat in the playoff final against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where they lost 4-1 in a penalty shootout.

Gravina, who took over the FIGC in October 2018, stated that his decision was a response to the failure to bring Italy back to the World Cup. Gianluigi Buffon, the renowned former goalkeeper who was part of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning team, also resigned from his role working closely with the men's national team.

Buffon, aged 48, expressed his desire to leave and choose a role that he believes is best for him. Italy had previously won the Euro 2020 tournament during Gravina's tenure, defeating England in a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium.
