Nasarawa State Addresses Rising Gender-Based Violence

During a press briefing held on Monday in Lafia, Hauwa Jugbo, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Humanitarian Services in Nasarawa State, expressed alarm over the rising cases of gender-based violence in the state. The briefing was part of the activities commemorating International Women's Day 2026.

Jugbo emphasized the importance of investing in women and girls for broader societal progress, highlighting that empowering women goes beyond justice and fairness. She noted the commitment of Governor Abdullahi Sule's administration to promote the welfare and economic empowerment of women.

Despite women's resilience in various sectors, Jugbo expressed concern about the reluctance of women to report cases of abuse due to traditional and religious stigmas. She urged women to speak out against gender-based violence and emphasized their crucial role in social and economic development.

The state plans to undertake several activities to mark International Women's Day, aiming to raise awareness and encourage support for women's rights.
