Northern Leaders Urge Enhanced Women's Protection in Nigeria

On International Women's Day 2026, leaders and organizations across Northern Nigeria are calling for renewed efforts to protect and empower women, especially in conflict-affected regions. Kano Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf reaffirmed his administration's commitment to promoting gender inclusivity and empowering women, emphasizing their critical role in societal development.

His spokesperson, Sunusi Batur Dawakin Tofa, highlighted the need for policies that expand women's access to education, healthcare, and entrepreneurship. Humanitarian organizations like So Children’s Village Nigeria noted that women and children make up nearly 80% of Nigeria's internally displaced population, facing significant risks such as gender-based violence.

In Bauchi, UNICEF's Dr. Nuzhat Rafiqu stressed the importance of protecting women's rights, while Shafa Atu Suleiman from Sokoto raised concerns about malnutrition among displaced women and children.

The collective message underscores the urgent need for structural reforms and support systems to safeguard women's rights and enhance their opportunities in society.
