Senegalese Fans Sentenced in AFCON Final Pitch Chaos

Eighteen Senegalese football fans were convicted and sentenced to prison terms ranging from three to twelve months by a Moroccan court due to their involvement in a chaotic pitch invasion during the Africa Cup of Nations final held in Rabat on January 18. The fans denied any wrongdoing, arguing that they were forced onto the pitch to avoid being hit by projectiles thrown towards them.

The prosecution had sought lengthier sentences, but the defense, represented by lawyers Naima El Guellaf and Patrick Kabou, contended that the video evidence presented was insufficient to verify the identities of the accused. They argued that the incident was witnessed live by the entire world, yet the court rejected their request to review the video evidence.

The Senegalese Football Federation has instructed its lawyers to lodge an appeal against the court's decision.
