Morocco Pardons Senegal Fans Jailed After AFCON Violence

Morocco has granted a royal pardon to 18 Senegalese fans who were jailed following violent incidents during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Morocco. The violence erupted when Senegalese fans protested the decision to award Morocco the title after Senegal left the pitch in protest.

The fans were among 18 individuals arrested and sentenced, with some receiving a royal pardon from King Mohammed VI, as announced by the palace. This decision was made on humanitarian grounds ahead of the Eid al-Adha celebrations and reflects the long-standing fraternal relationship between Morocco and Senegal.

Senegal's President, Bassir Diomay Fay, welcomed the support from Morocco, expressing gratitude for the royal pardon despite the controversy surrounding the events. Senegal won the AFCON final in extra time, but the Confederation of African Football's disciplinary committee ruled against them, leading to the protests.
