Jamaica to Petition King Charles on Slavery Reparations

Jamaica's government is preparing to submit a formal petition to King Charles on Monday, requesting that he refer critical legal questions about the enslavement of Africans in Jamaica to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. Culture Minister Olivia Grange announced this initiative, which aims to address the historical injustices faced by African ancestors.

The petition seeks to clarify three key issues: the legality of African enslavement under English law, its violation of international law, and whether Britain has a current legal obligation to provide reparations. Grange clarified that this petition is not a direct demand for payment but a step towards understanding the legal framework.

Buckingham Palace has been collaborating with Jamaica's Governor General to ensure proper filing of the petition. Grange highlighted the historical context, noting that when slavery was abolished in 1833, compensation was paid to slave owners, not the enslaved.

She pointed out that Britain continued to repay loans for this compensation until 2015, raising questions about the pursuit of reparations today.
