AWS Outage Caused by Fire at UAE Data Center

Amazon Web Services (AWS), founded by Jeff Bezos, faced a service disruption following a fire at its data center in the UAE on Sunday at 4:30 PM Dubai time. Reports indicate that an unidentified object struck the facility, leading to the fire.

AWS confirmed the incident via its health dashboard, stating that the fire department had to shut down utility power while backup generators worked to extinguish the blaze. Although the incident's direct link to the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict remains unclear, it coincided with reports of Iranian missile attacks in the region.

AWS noted that while new virtual computing server instances could not be launched in the affected region, existing instances were not impacted. However, services like DynamoDB and S3 experienced significant error rates and latency for several hours.

AWS implemented measures to restore network functions and enable customers to reassign elastic IP addresses, with full recovery pending safe restoration of power.
