Jihadist Expansion in Benin Threatens Nigeria's Security

Analysts from Nextier, a renowned policy think tank, have raised alarms regarding the expansion of jihadist groups into the Benin Republic, warning that this development poses serious security and economic risks to Nigeria. The report highlights the growing presence of the Katiba Hanifa faction of Jama Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimeen (JNIM) in northern Benin, which reportedly operates across the Sahel and has established logistical support for operations in Burkina Faso.

The report notes a dramatic rise in fatalities, with 58 deaths recorded in 2023 and projections of at least 575 by 2025 due to major assaults on military positions. Analysts argue that Benin's large informal economy, where 95% of its workforce is employed, creates fertile ground for jihadist infiltration.

The report emphasizes the need for Nigeria to strengthen military and diplomatic support for Benin, enhance border management, and coordinate economic activities to prevent further entrenchment of JNIM, especially ahead of Benin's 2026 elections.
