Jihadist Expansion in Benin: Threat to Nigeria's Security

The expansion of jihadist groups, notably the Katiba Hanifa faction of Jama Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimin (JNIM), in the Benin Republic is raising serious security concerns for Nigeria. Analysts argue that JNIM's presence in Benin serves two main objectives: to secure logistical support for operations in Burkina Faso and to weaken the Beninese military's capacity to counter insurgent attacks.

The group aims to establish a buffer zone along the tri-border area of Burkina Faso, Benin, and Togo, which would facilitate their operations and recruitment efforts. In 2023, Benin experienced 58 fatalities from jihadist attacks, with projections indicating a rise to 575 fatalities by 2025.

Notably, a coordinated attack in January 2025 resulted in the deaths of at least 28 Beninese soldiers. The surge in jihadist activities is linked to the burgeoning informal economy in Benin, which provides opportunities for recruitment and criminal activities, further complicating the security landscape in the region.
