FG Clarifies Jilli Market Airstrike Based on Intelligence

The Federal Government of Nigeria clarified that the airstrike conducted by the Nigerian Air Force at Jilli Market, located in the Gubio/Geidam Local Government Area of Borno State, was based on credible intelligence and not an indiscriminate attack. Alhaji Mohd Idris, the Minister of Information, stated that the area is a high-risk zone with a clear security advisory restricting civilian presence.

The airstrike targeted a known hub for Boko Haram and ISWAP operations, which has been under insurgent control for years. The government expressed deep regret over civilian casualties and extended condolences to affected families.

An independent investigation into the incident has been ordered to review the intelligence used for the strike. The Minister noted that the operation followed sustained intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance, confirming the presence of terrorist elements in the area.

The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, confirmed that Jilli Market had been officially closed for five years due to insurgent control. The government urged civilians to adhere to security advisories to avoid restricted zones.
