Buratai Defends Jilli Market Airstrike Against Terrorists

Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, the former Chief of Army Staff, described the recent airstrike on Jilli Market as a necessary military action targeting a known terrorist hub. In a statement made on Sunday, Buratai referenced credible intelligence indicating that Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters utilized the market for logistical operations.

He acknowledged reports of civilian casualties, expressing deep regret over the loss of innocent lives. Buratai commended the Nigerian Air Force and intelligence agencies for their courageous and professional execution of the operation.

He noted that Jilli Market has a long history as a logistical hub for terrorists, despite repeated military raids and closures over the years. Buratai emphasized that terrorists exploit the market with the help of individuals who patronize and supply them, complicating military operations.

He urged residents of Geidam, Gubio, Damasak, and Ngamdu to refrain from trading in markets linked to insurgent activities and called for sustained public support for the armed forces in their efforts to confront terrorism.
