GIMP-Nigeria Condemns Sheikh Jingir's Remarks on Christians

The Guild of Interfaith Media Practitioners Nigeria (GIMP-Nigeria) has issued a statement urging restraint and responsible preaching following remarks attributed to Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Jingir concerning Christians. GIMP-Nigeria described these remarks as unfortunate and provocative, warning that such inflammatory statements could exacerbate mistrust and threaten peaceful coexistence among Nigeria's diverse religious communities.

Abdulkarim Abdulmalik, the chairman of GIMP-Nigeria, emphasized that Nigeria is already grappling with insecurity, poverty, unemployment, and social fragmentation, making it crucial to avoid a deterioration of religious discourse. He cited historical examples of peaceful Muslim-Christian engagement, such as the relationship between Prophet Muhammad and the Christian ruler of Abyssinia, the Negus.

The guild called on Islamic scholars and organizations, including the Izala Society, NSCIA, and JNI, to clarify any statements inconsistent with Islamic principles of justice. Additionally, GIMP-Nigeria urged authorities to investigate allegations of incitement while cautioning against using law enforcement for political persecution.
