Gumi Calls for Separation of Religion and Politics in Nigeria

Dr Ahmad Gumi, a Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, called for the separation of religion from partisan politics in Nigeria. His remarks came in response to comments made by Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, the National Chairman of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), who defended the APC Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket at a mass wedding in Kano.

Jingir urged Muslims to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing shared Islamic faith with his running mate. Gumi acknowledged the criticism Jingir faced from Christian leaders and civil society groups, labeling his comments as divisive.

He suggested that Jingir's extreme views were influenced by the prevalent bigotry against Islam. Gumi also noted that the opposition is not exempt from using religion for political gain.

He urged political figures to refrain from involving religion in political battles, advocating for respect for Nigeria's religious diversity. Gumi's statements reflect ongoing tensions regarding the intersection of religion and politics in the country.
