NUPENG Warns of Job Losses and Rights Suppression

William Akporeha, President of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), delivered a valedictory address at the union's 6th quadrennial delegate conference in Lagos, highlighting significant concerns regarding job losses and the suppression of workers' rights in Nigeria's oil and gas industry. He emphasized that the removal of fuel subsidies has adversely affected workers, particularly in the informal sector, leading to loss of livelihoods.

Akporeha expressed the need for government support in reskilling and retraining workers. He raised alarms about increasing exclusionary policies that negatively impact worker welfare and warned that these issues could heighten tensions within the industry.

The union has noted a rise in unfair labor practices aimed at weakening union membership. NUPENG remains committed to ensuring that workers enjoy their rights to union representation and collective bargaining.

Akporeha also pointed out the growing insecurity and economic strain affecting members, including incidents of hijacking and kidnapping.
