Jonathan Fights Lawsuit to Contest 2027 Presidential Race

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is contesting a lawsuit that seeks to disqualify him from participating in the 2027 presidential elections. His lawyer, Chief Chri Uch, presented the case to Justice Peter Lifu at the Federal High Court in Abuja, indicating that they need time to respond to the preliminary objection and counter-affidavit filed by the plaintiff's counsel, Ndubuisi Ukpai.

The court has adjourned the matter until May 11, 2023, at 2 PM to hear Jonathan's objections to the substantive suit. The lawsuit, filed by lawyer Johnmari Jideobi, aims to prevent Jonathan from presenting himself as a candidate for any political party in Nigeria, citing constitutional grounds.

The suit is marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) listed as defendants.
