Jonathan Critiques Governors' Actions in Osun Election

Former President Goodluck Jonathan issued a statement on Tuesday titled ‘Osun and the Need to Set New Boundaries for Political Conduct in Off-Cycle Elections,’ condemning the actions of serving governors and influential political figures during the Osun governorship election. He expressed concern over the practice of these officials arriving in states with large entourages and security personnel, which he deemed "unwholesome." Jonathan commended the Independent National Electoral Commission, security agencies, political parties, and Osun voters for the peaceful election.

He recalled similar issues during the 2013 Anambra and 2014 Ekiti elections, where he ordered political leaders to leave the states. Jonathan warned that excessive political mobilization could create an atmosphere of intimidation and questioned whether such practices align with democratic competition.

He noted that if opposing parties matched governmental influence and security, it could deepen political tensions and undermine the democratic process. His comments were prompted by the significant presence of APC governors and their aides during the Osun election.
