JRB and Police Target Illegal Tax Roadblocks in Nigeria

The Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and the Police have launched a crackdown to dismantle illegal tax roadblocks across Nigeria. This initiative, unveiled during the 158th meeting on December 2023, aims to restore order in revenue administration and alleviate the burden on businesses and commuters who have long faced arbitrary levies.

Segun Adesokan, the Executive Secretary of JRB, emphasized the need for a uniform, transparent, and efficient tax system nationwide, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's reform agenda to promote fair economic growth. The crackdown prohibits unauthorized tax practices, particularly along transport corridors, where agents have been extorting drivers.

The JRB issued a communiqué banning these practices and called for the establishment of a joint national task force with the police to identify and prosecute illegal tax operations. Deputy Inspector General of Police, Moham Abdul Suleiman, welcomed this collaboration, recognizing the economic security risks posed by illegal roadblocks.

The initiative aims to eliminate unlawful practices and protect citizens from harassment.
