Julius Berger Advocates Sustainable Construction at Summit

Julius Berger Nigeria Plc participated in the Future Cities Summit 2026, organized by the Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN) in Lagos, under the theme "Building the Future: Scaling Sustainability for Greener Cities." Engr. Thomas Christl, Regional Manager of Julius Berger, was a panellist in the session titled “Materials, Methods, and Margins: Low Carbon Construction Constraints and Opportunities.” He highlighted the high upfront investment as a barrier to low-carbon construction but noted that sustainable buildings offer long-term value through reduced maintenance costs and lower energy consumption. Christl advocated for viewing sustainable construction from a lifecycle perspective, stating that while initial investments may be higher, the long-term benefits outweigh the costs.

He emphasized the potential of recycled concrete to reduce carbon emissions and called for collaboration among academic institutions, construction companies, material manufacturers, and regulators to establish standards supporting recycled concrete adoption in Nigeria.
