Former NIA DG Albert Horsfall Passes Away at 84

Albert Horsfall, who served as the first director-general of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), has died at the age of 84. His son, Donald Horsfall, confirmed the news in a family statement, which did not specify the date or cause of death.

Born on December 22, 1941, Horsfall had a distinguished career within Nigeria's security framework, having served in the Force and later in the Department of State Services (DSS). He was instrumental in establishing Nigeria's foreign intelligence structure as the inaugural director-general of the NIA.

Beyond his intelligence career, Horsfall also chaired the Oil Minerals Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC), a now-defunct federal agency aimed at addressing the developmental needs of oil-producing communities, and led the Social Rehabilitation Committee. His passing is recognized as a significant loss to Nigeria's modern intelligence and security history.
